Vampires…Pamela now believed that the reason they were so stupid was because they were the ones who, as humans, had not been smart enough to get away from the pursing maker. Being vampire did not make you smarter. It just gave stupid folk super powers.
And she could not abide stupid. After one hundred years of having to deal with the rash, foolish, and senseless, undead, it was time to step out and reward those who thought with their mouth and their motives. Silver, sunlight, and stakes…the big three S’s and not necessarily in that order.
When New Orleans and been invited to work the mansion, those that were not irresponsible and actually paid attention to what was going on around them, knew it was going to be a killing field. Those one or two who knew Eric came to work so that they could rise another day.
Then Pam had made believers out of one or two more.
Those that thought they were special because The Authority had carried them, well…they did not get to rise another day and be heedless of the warnings all around them. That being….Day Warrior was all about Mainstreaming. That meant you were all about Mainstreaming, as well.
After Eric had made examples that morning of those sly and crafty devils that thought they were pulling a fast one, her life got a little bit easier. What was left of New Orleans stepped in and took over the mansion.
Eric had excused his girls and told them it was time to log out and start their well deserved time off. Pamela, not having to be told twice, was vamp speed out and over to the house where she had her suitcases, packed. She was driving her happy ass to Shreveport and then a quick flight to New Orleans and she was doing a little shopping and walking and some more shopping.
If she needed to be back for something, why Wallace could just pop her back….and he had…and he did…and he…and he…and he was just too fucking good to be true! Fine ass and all.
Thinking of him as just a fine ass kept her sane. Forbidden was to think of him as anything else! But a fine ass he had and his love of all things in nature….he drug her ass everywhere so that she could enjoy them both. His ass and nature.
Before they had even started…..she shuddered at the word…..dating….he was fascinated with her phone. Wanted to know what it did and how it worked and Molly had talked about Apps and what were those and how did they work…
Because Wallace did not give a rat’s ass about talking to anyone on a phone, he had The Bond…he did, however have an App that alerted him when things in nature happened, anywhere on good old planet Earth. New volcano just sprung up…he had to go see it…hurricane brewing off the coast of Africa, let’s go take a look. Tornados touching down in Oklahoma, he was there.
Pam thought that what he really wanted to be when he grew up was a nature/storm chaser.
That is what they were doing on the coast of Louisiana, this evening. For Christmas, he wanted to watch the moon come up over the ocean and he wanted her to be with him.
So, hand in hand they walked from the house that sat over looking the water. There was a part of her that wondered why she had agreed to this. There was another part of her that knew exactly why she had agreed to this.
Wallace was many things. Male topped that list. Fae sat right there beside it. And above those two words was Deadly.
Eric was one scary guy! Wallace did not give you the opportunity to be scared. You were just dead.
He did not have a problem taking a life that threatened, another’s. Things in nature, he left, alone. Except for drinking her blood and eating Were, he was a vegetarian if he thought something of that venue smelled good. If not, he was content to live off of The Light that passed through him. He had a great respect for nature and always stepped lightly so he would not squash any insect that was below his feet.
The Light that fed him danced around him whenever he was around children. Wallace adored Hunter and talked about the twins as if they were already here. If anyone passed them by with a small child, he would always nudge her and smile. At no time did she encourage this but that did not stop him. Although she did not make unpleasant remarks about children when he did this, she would roll her eyes at him and he would just laugh and wink at her.
That scared her…
How accepting he was of how she acted. Like maybe he knew she was going to change her mind. Like maybe he could see something she could not. So she had stopped rolling her eyes when he made small talk about little people. She was not going to encourage him!
Except for clearly what was his desire for a child and a committed relationship, for a guy, he was not so bad. So here she was, sharing a beach house with him and walking out hand in hand to look at the moon.
“Your oceans here are beautiful but deadly,” he was standing behind her with his arms around her. “ Your cold moon compliments your world. I think I prefer our two blue ones, but there is much beauty that sits above this vastness of water that is raw power and is a sovereign unto itself.”
Whenever she spent time with him, she understood vampire, better. He had tremendous concentration and self will and a natural curiosity about how things worked in this realm. With him as a guide, she had seen and done things. He was fearless. She had thought she was…but he redefined the word.
They spent the night out on the beach. He had stood the entire time with his arms wrapped around her, his cloak around both of them. And, Pamela thought, in this huddled warmth, she could feel what he felt as he tried to build a oneness between himself and the pounding surf before them.
“I have never seen the sun rise above the ocean,” she said as the rosy glow began to light the surface of the water.”
“The Blue Realm is not anchored, here,” he whispered in her ear, “but I think you have had enough of my blood to be able to stand here with me and watch. If you begin to feel the least bit warm, let me know and I will pop us out and to safety.”
Pam nodded her ahead in agreement. She could see it, coming just above the horizon. What every vampire feared. What every human welcomed.
There was not only red in the sky, but she was beginning to see it reflected in the water, as well. Like ribbons of red candy she had known as a human, as the sun made its way across the waves.
Light was beginning to fill the sky.
“The water,” she could feel the smile in his voice, “it’s green. I thought it would be blue.”
The surf was sounding louder. He jumped back and pulled her with him when the spray hit them.
“The tide is coming in,” she smiled. “It is going to get deeper, here. We’ll get hit with more spray if we stand here much longer.”
“Would you mind?” he asked. “The sun has crested. I desire to stand here a few moments longer. Are you fevered?”
“No.” Truthfully, she was mesmerized. “I seem to be doing alright.
As human, she had been too busy trying to survive to notice the things that caused this male to stop and contemplate what was around him.
“What do you see when you look at the horizon?” she asked, a touch of awe in her voice.
“I see a red sky with a beautiful life giving orb pulsing. I see every drop of water that catches the light. I see life everywhere I look. I see the same as you. Perhaps in sharper detail.”
In her heart, it was with pleasure that she greeted his words. Here was someone who understood her. Saw and smelled what she did. She would not ever have to explain the things to him she experienced due to being vampire. He did, however, explain things to her.
As the sun continued to rise in the sky, they stood in the same spot until the tide began to go out. She could feel his blood surging through her as he continued to reach out to the waves and the small sand crabs and the birds and the very rocks beneath their feet.
“You know,” she said, “that I can only be a companion to you, Wallace. Not a wife, not a mother to your children. No matter how much you want this or try to push your will into your blood that is in me, I am vampire.”
She could feel the shift in him. Damn, she hated it when he was serious. She liked his light hearted ways and the way he teased her and he told her about his life and how he made love to her. This….this was a side she did not want him to embrace. This serious side of him that scared her most of all.
“You see this path before us. As the tide and the waves roll in and out, the course of this path changes. New things are added, old things are swept, away, some things remain the same. You and I, we are this path.”
Time to end this shit. He was scaring her!
“Wallace, you know how much I love my shoes. I do not have one pair that I could wear to walk this path of rocks and packed down wet sand with you.”
“Not to worry, my Princess,” he turned her around to face him and he was laughing.
“I have been to your nail spa. I have seen how they put jewels in your nails. We shall have your toe nails thusly adorned. Your feet shall still be the envy of all that see them.”
Squinting at him with the evil eye, he laughed and pulled her up for a kiss.
Kissing him, she pulled back. “You know I am terrified of what you are suggesting…”
“I know…” he smiled at her. “And if I could undo your past, I would. But if I did that, you would not be vampire and I would still be alone.”
She could see the love he held for her dancing there in his eyes. He kissed her on the tip of her nose and then winked and felt up her ass.
The serious had passed and his ready grin was back. They were back in neutral territory. Nothing was sacred and you took just as good as you gave.
“So this really is all about you,” she drawled.
Laughing out loud he replied, “Yes my Princess,” he winked at her, “it is.”
