Chapter 20 Talk to the Hand…
It was midnight. Hours yet until sunup. They were all walking about and admiring the stars. The ladies had not been outside in centuries and were enchanted to once more be in the company of nature. Samuel started a fire and they all gathered around, watching the flames and listening to the water falling into the pool.
They were all sitting and telling stories when Siggy came vamping in.
“Eric,” he said. “The lights are back up and running on the mountain. A hit please, so I may go snooping about. I am curious to see what they have running their electricity.”
Eric offered Siggy his wrist. “You be back here in one hour,” his voice carried a threat. “If you are not, I will,” he stressed, “come looking for you.”
“I know,” the big vamp grinned. “I will do nothing to incur your wrath. Especially after what I saw last night.”
With a grand sweeping bow to the group, Siggy was gone.
“What?” Mina stopped watching a bat swooping for insects, “what was that?” she asked, coming over and sitting down next to Eric. “You let him feed from you…”
“Ah, well yes,” Eric said. “That is a bit of a story.”
“May we know of it?” she asked.
“Well of course, but I think it is easier to explain with the slides. Molly, if you would not mind. And Samuel, you do a much better job with the translations.”
Samuel started at the beginning and they watched as the information flashed by them, the story that was being told, explaining their beginning.
Eric took a call as Samuel continued the briefing.
“Siggy, asking for an extension,” was all he said in a whisper to Sookie.
“He find something?” Sookie asked.
“Oh yes,” Eric smiled. “He will explain when he returns.”
When the slides finished, Mina, Marla and Milly were just a bit flabbergasted. Then Molly ran the last minutes of Godric’s life and they all three wept.
“Blood born,” Mina gripped her sisters’ hands. “That is why the blue…” she hesitated. “That is why we sometimes see blue lights coming from us. This is what makes us desirable to Act. We are descended from him and he thinks to change us into one like his Act’yed. And he thought to use Godric to do this. To mate with one of us…and if we did not survive, he would find others…”
“Yes,” Eric nodded. “We believe this to be true and are acting on that assumption. He wants both male and female so that he might continue his line.”
“And you and Sookie have the blue flame also. And…and you allow Siggy, Ian, Cedric and my Vlad to drink from you so that they become like you, as well. Like Act,” she said.
“Yes. They wish to stand with me when I defeat him. They only way I will allow this is that I know they will be victorious.”
Mina was easy to read. Lovingly, her eyes rested on her husband. Then there was fear.
“Mina, I am more than Act,” Eric smiled at her. “He has diminished and Sookie and I stand as one. My Godric now stands watch over us. We shall be victorious.”
“That is why he wanted us,” she nodded and held her sisters’ hands that much tighter. “He wanted us to have children so he could…” her voice hesitated, “keep the girls and sell the boys into slavery…!” There was no mistaking the horror in her voice.
“I believe so,” Eric said, his voice low and growling. “He wished to restart his line. He thought to do this with my maker, mating him to the three of you. Godric ended his own life to protect Sookie and I. And to spare you, as well.”
“Blessings on him,” all three sisters said, together.
“That he gave his life that you might live…and that he might watch over us,” Mina said and they crossed, themselves.
“And your champions,” Marla’s serious face regarded each male in the room. “They want to go with you to defeat him.”
“Yes,” all the men, nodded.
Milly spoke up. Her voice was sweet and musical. “Sookie, do you not fear for your daughter? This one that is promised to you?”
“No,” she smiled. “I learned to harness my blue fire and I will use it to defeat our enemies. I am Eric’s warrior during the day while he rests. With a thought, I can flame those that think to harm us. Our daughter will be safe, enough. We shall teach her to do so, as well.”
“And Vlad,” Mina’s voice was soft. “Do you think drinking Eric’s blood will…”her voice caught, “make him fertile with a blood born?”
Sookie shrugged. “There are many steps to that process. You three are different from me and the guys…” she shrugged. “They are different form Eric. I think all of them want a family,” she said motioning out to the men in the room. “I think that is one of the reasons,” Sookie said quietly, “that they wish to stand with Eric. But to stand with a family at the end of the day and the beginning of each morning, yes, I think that is worth taking a chance, on.”
“This thought scares me,” Mina sighed and her sisters nodded in agreement.
“I did me as well,” Sookie smiled. “But if you do happen to get pregnant, Samuel will be more than happy to raise the baby for you.”
Samuel grinned and nodded his head yes. “They will be safe with me.”
Mina drew back. “I have blue fire, we all three do. If Sookie can learn this mystery, I believe we might be able to do so as well.”
Samuel laughed out loud. “The same thing Sookie said to me when I suggested it to her, only I believe you by far, were the more polite.”
“Damn straight,” Sookie arched her eyebrow at Samuel. “I have nothin’ nice to say to anyone who thinks they can do a better job raisin’ our child then Eric and I. Just step on up and ask me and I’ll set you straight…on your ass,” she smiled, “while I toast you to a charred black bit and let Godric escort your ass on into Hell.”
Eric laughed. “There you have it, what my Sookie thinks of someone else raising our child. And that would include Act,” he wiggled his eyebrows.
“Yes,” her voice became low and dangerous, “I can’t wait to have a few words with that mother fucker. Talk to my hand,” she smiled sweetly, “and let me light you up!”
“You were far more polite,” Samuel whispered to the ladies.
Samuel ducked and Sookie missed as they all settled back into their chairs and talked about the future.
“Siggy is inbound,” Eric said. “An hour to sun up. He is cutting it very close.”
Walking inside, Siggy nodded to the group that was watching a movie and pulled Eric, aside.
“I was listening, Eric, at a pipe that ran straight into somewhere Act was having a meeting. He is in some deep were shit. They are coming to audit the books.”
“Popular past time,” Eric responded. “Who? Do you know?”
“Business partners, was all I could discern and apparently his equals.”
“Equals?” Sookie arched an eyebrow. “Ya’ll need to speak up so I don’t have to strain to hear. Just who would Act consider an equal?”
The group looked thoughtful as Samuel turned off the television and motioned for Siggy and Eric to join them.
“Well, it is the end of the supes fiscal year,” Samuel nodded. “So I can understand the audit. Tomorrow is Saturday, money is closed for business on my God’s holy days. Plus, there is a new moon coming on.”
“Is that significant?” Sookie asked.
“I work the money, Sookie, the same way the farmers work their fields. You plant certain things under certain moon phases. This holds true for money as well. I invest, divest and purchase certain things according to the moon signs. I do no work at all on our holy days.”
“And the entire supe realm follows this?” she asked.
“Well yes,” Samuel nodded. “I set it in place thousands of years ago and this is how it works still today.”
“That is impressive, Samuel,” she said.
He shrugged in reply. “We have forgotten so much and honor, nothing. It is a wonder the earth does not shake us all off and into the abyss.”
“Well, I just might have to agree to that,” nodding her head, Sookie was watching the fire. “And you do not handle Act’s money, correct?” she looked up and smiled at him.
“That is correct. And when he calls, wishing to sell some jewels, or land or whatever, I am going to tell him to just talk to the hand,” he smiled and held his up.
“Ah-h-h Samuel,” she grinned. “You do know that you are giving him the finger, right?” she asked.
“Flippin’ him the bird. Tellin’ him to fuck off.”
Samuel looked over at Eric. “My brother,” he shook his head in dismay. “I have seen you extend your middle finger many times to business associates and you would say talk to the hand.”
“Oy vey,” Samuel raised an eyebrow at Eric. “No wonder they show me such respect in meetings, or maybe not.”
Eric was laughing. “Oh Samuel, they respect you just fine, you are after all The Da’vid. You can do no wrong,” he said blowing him a kiss.
Samuel rolled his eyes at his brother. It was hopeless. Samuel believed just about everything Eric said. Well, that explained a lot…like why his business associates were always a little leery of him.
Eric watched Samuel process through all of that and then smiled when Samuel figured out why everyone left the meetings in a hurry. “I am intrigued by just who Act would consider an equal. So Siggy, you think they are equal business partners? In the casino? The town? Did Act say?”
“I was not under that impression that this dealt merely with money. He seemed more desperate than that. He said something about they had him by the short hairs and would collect their pound of flesh if he did not pay up in העבדים של כחולים,” Siggy spoke the words carefully. “That is it, exactly. I don’t speak Hebrew. I know Samuel does.”
“Blue slaves,” Samuel hissed and his eyes went to the women. “So perhaps his equals are not in business,” Samuel’s fangs snicked down.
“Something more of a spiritual nature,” Sookie’s fangs were down as well. Lightning forming in her eyes. “Or maybe of a fallen nature…”
“That is what Godric meant by waiting. We could have them all,” Eric’s eyes’ were spitting blue sparks.
“Talk to the hand,” Sookie cackled wickedly, as she held up both in front of her and lightning bolts danced around them.
“Godric said we were to wait until Act entered the casino. We can do that,” Eric smiled as he righted himself and looked at his friends. For the first time he noted that he was surrounded by his brothers of the blue flame. Their fangs down and lightning dancing around them. “Oh my,” he smiled. “My brothers, my champions, I thank you for walking with us. But perhaps not this time,” he cautioned. “We now have unknown players.”
“You cannot deny us now,” Samuel smiled at him, sparks sizzling from his pores. “Not this time. If the fallen ones are to be destroyed at your hands, I wish to be in attendance and witness this.”
“Hear hear!” thundered from the crowd. “Talk to the hand,” they all hooted as they held theirs up and a thunder-clap exploded inside the house causing all of them to laugh even louder.
For the next week, upon rising, everyone sat and watched the casino action that was being streamed onto the TV. Looking to see if anything had changed and seeing nothing worth noting, they would then wander off. Sometimes to practice their gifts, other times…well…to pitch a little woo. Vlad kept a close watch on his sisters-in-law while Cedric and Ian thought to make a little bit of time with them.
Mina would squeeze her husband’s hand tighter when he would growl at one of the males for sitting to close, or speaking to sweetly or for letting their eyes look upon those women who were far to good for the likes of those two!
Then at ten minutes before the one o’clock hour, they would all wander back in and start chanting, “Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight!”
Pam was the only one who had a realistic grip on the situation, she thought. She was on-line, running the betting sites with Vegas odds on when the next major storm would push through the Sangre de Cristo Mountain range in New Mexico. She had a really good idea it was going to be soon. Yes, they all talked like this little war was going to be self-contained inside the mountain. Pam knew her maker. Eric would end up dragging that cock sucking Act’s ass outside and into the daylight just to prove that he was the real deal and Act was not. The storm would rage and lightning would crash and Eric would howl in triumph! “My maker is such a guy,” she sighed, “so predictable.” Chuckling, she watched the wanna bes starting to strike at her money bait. “Like draining humans in a hospital,” she smiled as she upped her bet to a million.
The next evening, Pam was watching TV by herself. Tonight’s all-star cast was at the casino. Act had walked back in with two other friends. They never stayed long. Pam had volunteered her happy ass to be in attendance during the evenings and if do nothing else listen for names. Eric had listened and even agreed. Tomorrow night she was strutting her stuff. Time to move in for the kill on the betting sites!
When she rose, she took her time getting dressed. She would glitter like a new diamond…why, she wanted everyone to know just exactly where she was in that building! Plus, Daddy and Mommy Sookie were still having a go of it. “Mm-m-m,” she sighed, “I love having a family that gives me super powers.”
“Take the Mercedes, tonight,” was all Samuel had said when she walked in all slinked-out with her big ass diamonds to make her point. Blowing him a kiss, taking a hit of Eric, she was out the door.
They were all waiting up for her. At two-thirty she walked in with a big smile on her face.
“Who the fuck is Zzal and a little jerk off by the name of Sariel. He is five foot nothing and stinks. That little cocksucker looked at me and snickered as he walked by, ‘Dead meat should stay dead.’ Eric, when the time comes, you call me before you end him. I have a few things to say to him and maybe be the last thing he sees before I pop his eyes out with my fangs.”
“She does not taken criticism very well,” Samuel said. “But she does come with useful information,” he saluted her. “Z’zal is a fallen and Sariel is a pretentious little bastard in demon form,” Samuel was licking his fangs. “That iel ending on his name, that denotes an arch-angel. He has not nor has he ever been an iel. His name is Sar,” Samuel was chuckling.
The room was watching The Da’vid. All this and money know how, too!
“Samuel,” Pamela smiled at him, “how do you know this?”
“This was common knowledge when I was a small child. I was taught my faith’s history at my mother’s knee.”
“Oh-o-o-o,” they all nodded in understanding.
“Interestin’,” Sookie smiled. “I think I am beginning to see a plan.”
Eric did not enjoy having strong words with Sookie. But this was an ongoing discussion for the past day and he was not going to give.
“Talk to the hand,” Sookie gave Eric the stink eye. “I am doin’ this. I will be the bait. Pam will walk in with me into the casino, I will blue spark my way around the machines, win big, squeal loud and long like a stuck pig and draw everyone’s attention to me.
Act will be watchin’ from the floor, he will think, oh goody got a live blue sparkin’ one and he will show me off to his buddies. Then you will track me via our special love connection and together we will kick his ass,” she said proudly.
Eric did not look convinced. “No,” he eyed her, shaking his head no, just to emphasize his point.
“Yes,” she batted her eyes at him. “You know I am right. This could take forever. Godric said when Act walked back into the casino was our time. Well look, he was there tonight with his big bad crew for fifteen minutes,” she pulled Eric’s face down to hers. “Fifteen fuckin’ minutes. Now, we need to be able to snare him in that amount of time. Wherever he holds me captive, you can sneak in and keep me company,” she smiled at him.
“I don’t like it,” he said for the tenth time, a bit louder.
“I will let you kick the big-bad’s ass by yourself,” she smiled sweetly.
“You promise,” he said, his eyes still squinting at her.
“Yes, I promise, cross my heart,” she made an X over the area.
“Pamela, move your ass and place your biggest bet. Time for you and your meal to get to the casino.”
“Eric,” Mina came in with Vlad and saw the flurry of activity. “Is it tonight?”
“Yes,” he nodded. “Sookie is going to be bait, I will follow her in…” Eric stopped and looked around and smiled. “We will all follow her in. You and your sisters will be safe, here. No need to worry.”
“You really are going to destroy him?” Mina whispered.
“Yes,” he smiled. “Samuel will be staying,” he said rather loudly, “because we still do not know who his maker is.”
There was growling coming from the hallway as Samuel entered the room. “Oh do not…” he began, “you are not my maker and cannot dictate my life.
“Samuel,” Eric’s voice was firm. “You are old. The oldest vampire I know. And your knowledge is old…very old…something I think you inherited from your maker. Which means your maker is old. Perhaps one of the ones that is going to be present, tonight. We are this close, you do not get to turn on us because your maker commands it.”
“Eric,” Samuel gazed up at him, his face determined. “You know I am not one to swear but, you self-righteous fucking bastard,” he glared at his brother. “How dare you point the obvious out to me, you fucking were shit head!” he grumped.
“Feel better,” Eric chuckled.
“No,” Samuel crossed his arms and glared at him. “And maybe, a bit.”
“Good, because your Jewish ass is staying here.”
There was another long, low growl and Eric could have sworn he heard Samuel mutter something about someday I am marrying your daughter.
“You know I can hear you muttering,” Eric glared at Samuel and Samuel offered him a sweet, innocent smile.
“Go with God,” Samuel bowed to him, “and be safe in your journey and glorious in your victory.”
“I would take that with me if I thought it came from your heart,” Eric chuckled.
“You two need to stop your fussin’,” Sookie had her hand on her hip, glaring at both. “This is not how we are going to start tonight’s little adventure off. Now kiss and make up. I mean it you two.”
“I do not like it when we are in disagreement,” Samuel hovered up and was looking Eric straight in the eyes. “One sniff of trouble,” Samuel said as he put in his earwig, “and I shall be right there.”
“Fair enough,” Eric agreed. “You shall be the cavalry riding in at the last-minute, blue lightning blazing and calling down curses from your God.”
The two men stood silently regarding each other for long minutes. Eric laid his forehead against Samuel’s and whispered. “Samuel, I would storm the gates of heaven or war through the bowels of hell to bring you back to me,” Eric’s voice held all of the love he had for this being. “You must be alive if you wish to be my son-in-law,” he whispered as he kissed him and taking a step back, Eric went to advise Sookie on how to dress.
Samuel landed softly upon the floor and stood still for several minutes. “He does not play fair, does he,” Mina smiled at Samuel.
“No,” he sighed, “he does not. And most of the time, he makes perfectly good sense.”
“Most of the time?” Vlad asked.
“Yes,” Samuel smiled, “back in the sixties, he wanted me to invest heavily in eight-track tape players. I told him that was not the technology of the future.”
Vlad looked puzzled and said, “Did Eric say why?”
“Eric liked to punch the button and listen to the tape, switch tracks. He said he found something about the mechanical sound very comforting.” Samuel shrugged. “Must be some noise that he identifies with from his time as Viking. I have found that he takes comfort from things from his human past and gets disagreeable if that history is not correct.
There is a Da’vid wing at The Met. He went with me opening night for the Viking exhibit. I had to drag him out because in the chieftain’s long house there was no blessing carved into the top beam. He was up there with a thousand-year old knife he picked up from an exhibit correcting that wrong, demanding loudly the entire time why he had not been consulted before the Viking experts, he had laughed hysterically, had damned Viking history. I still do not know if that was actual hysterical laughter or if Eric was just doing it to make a point.” Samuel was lost in a thought. “There are times when the oddest things take him places I would never have guessed. There was a yellow rubber duckie floating in a fountain we passed one night in D.C. He waded in and pushed it around in the water and giggled the entire time.
Eric is very passionate by nature,” Samuel continued on. “He loves deeply and commits himself and all that he has to anything that he considers worthy.”
“He really is going to destroy Act and the other two,” Mina’s eyes were full of wonder.
“Oh yes, but not to worry,” Samuel smiled. “Eric will do the right thing. He will drag his happy ass here to finish him off so that we may watch.”
Sookie was all about good sex. She was all for great sex. But if Eric brought her to orgasm one more time, her voice would be raw from screaming and she would sound like a bull-frog and would not be able to entice anyone.
As she floated on the blue haze above the bed, somewhere between bliss and wanting more, she knew it was time to get going.
After the shower, she put on minimal makeup and up-swept her hair and then on went the dress.
Eric let out a wolf whistle when he saw her. “Fresh, lovely and enticing,” he grinned. “That white sequin dress is cut to show off your entire back and yet covers and revels nothing of your perfect breasts. It will make them crazy. Such a tease,” Eric smoldered at her.
“Yes, well,” she grinned. “Don’t be late because if one of them gets fresh, I will tell him to talk to the hand.”
“And rightly so,” he said his voice most serious. “But I shall not be late. I will be following the car. That is Pam knocking. Time to go.”
There among the tourist at the casino, Sookie was a light that drew moths to the effervescent blue flame. “Talk to the hand,” she would giggle and then pull the slot machine and lights would flash and balloons would drop from the ceiling and she would squeal and scream at the top of her lungs as she jumped up and down!
Pamela just stood back and watched the crowd and collected the money. They were cheering her on and Sookie was passing out chips and sometimes just throwing them up in the air for the people to catch!
“Thousand, thousand, thousand,” the floor started chanting as Sookie stood looking at the thousand dollar slot machine. “I just don’t know,” she giggled.
“Thousand, thousand!” they all smiled and waved at her.
“Thousand, thousand!” she yelled back and threw her hands up into the air dancing around and went to stand on the platform to pull the thousand dollar handle.
Everything in the room stopped. The little blonde was on a roll. Would it continue?
“Give me odds,” Pam said to a dealer at a table, “that she makes it. Send it in to Vegas. What is your percentage?” she asked.
“Ten percent cut,” came the reply.
“Works for me,” Pam nodded in agreement.
“They are calling it a hundred to one shot,” the dealer came back with the information and the pit boss stepped over to take her marker.
“I want a million,” Pam smiled.
“Good to go,” the pit boss nodded.
Sookie battered her eyes at Pam and then shouted, “Talk to the hand!” and pulled the handle.
Cherry, cherry, and then cherry! The crowd went wild as more balloons and glitter dropped and Sookie was screaming and dancing around on the platform. One million big steaming ones were dropping out onto the floor.
“I am gonna want my hundred mil minus your cut and taxes in a cashier’s check,” Pamela smiled. “And I want it now.”
Act, Sariel and Zzal were in deep negotiations.
Act was stalling but being very casual about it. He kept the evenings full. These two had been his top buyers back in the day. That had allowed him to amass a fortune in jewels and favors that he had called upon to be fulfilled. Now he knew, he had been foolish to squander his favors, his children, and to piss off Act’yed.
Now Zzal had come calling, expecting him to produce a blue female that was bearing.
Who knew that in seven hundred years he had would not be able to make that happen and now he was out of time! Zzal had come to collect!
It was a domino effect. He had bargained with Zzal, promising him a child when it was needed. Zzal had made some deal with a higher level fallen and the mother vessel was his offering for the favor that had been granted him. In turn, that fallen owed a debt of a blue vessel. “It boggles the mind,” Act cursed his luck as he watched the two across from him. “Who would have thought there would someday be a shortage of my children?” Good thing these two were so easily distracted. Zzal picked through the umber, working the color into his nails. Gad, Zzal would eat him whole if he did not tell him what he wanted to hear. It was time to grind up some malachite and praise its values of virility and perhaps, when they were not looking, strike out for the high country.
Sar, what a joke! Act refused to acknowledge that the low-level demon could even aspire to be an arch, was here as witness to taste the blood of the blue, verify it was a blue, and sample whatever else he thought he could help himself, to, as proof to take back to his broker.
This was done because agreements had in the past been broken and blue vessels stolen. Act had sold a son or auctioned a daughter to never have them arrive at their destination. He had been accused of any number of false deals, so he liked having a witness and used a reputable brokerage firm. That did not mean the escort would not lie if it were to their benefit.
Tricky business dealing with chattel, but you could get just about anything you wanted and he had. His children were prime.
And seven hundred years ago, he had wanted safe passage for himself and three females. And to be left alone while he built his empire. Now it was time to pay for that favor. Desperately, he needed a distraction.
There was a knock at the door. “Pardon,” Act bowed his head to the two who were looking over raw umber and malachite. “Yes,” he growled as he opened it.
“Master, you need to see this, there is a little blonde that is winning big all over the casino,” the were whispered. “I think I see blue smoke or something coming from her hand…”
“Show me,” he said as he watched the casino floor on the phone and yes! Yes! Yes! Blue flowed from her hand!
“Perfect,” he smiled. “Tell her she needs to sign the tax forms for the state and the IRS and bring her to me.”
If Eric was anything, he was subtle. With a grace and tact he did not know he was capable of having, he waited outside and the boys went in to watch. They were his eyes and ears and streaming live to him and to the house, as well. Occasionally Samuel would chime in and snicker clever things about being left behind to count were farts and make sure not to step in steaming piles of were shit that you would always find to the rearmost of the battle troops.
“You did that one night,” Samuel said matter of fact. “We never got the smell out of those boots and had to throw them, away. Sadly, Old Curt had passed and never again were you graced with such craftsmanship.”
“Well just fuck,” Eric snarked to himself, “those were my favorite tall boots.”
But look at what just walked onto his screen! Sookie was just mouthwatering delicious, he thought as he licked his fangs! Oh, the big money had been won. There went Pamela over to the cage to collect and kept on walking. Sookie was being photographed and congratulated and just look at that, here came two cocksucking weres to escort her to Act. “Talk to the hand,” he smiled as he felt his blood stirring to such depths that he thought he could blast through the earth all the way to China.
Pam was at his side. “Child, haul your ass on back to the house. It is about to get dangerous out here.”
“I am placing that bet now,” she laughed gleefully as she hit the numbers on her phone. “I am on my way and I will be home when all hell breaks loose. Until then, my maker.” Blowing him an air kiss, she was gone.
