“Oh goody,” Sookie grinned and clapped her hands. “Thanks Eric for leaving the portal open. S.I., if Eric gets busy, can you maintain it?” she asked with hope in her voice.
“Of course my Princess, “ he said with pride. “However…” he shook a claw at her.
“I know, I know,” she nodded in understanding. “Safety first!”
“That is correct!”
“Wish I had some popcorn,” Gran sighed. “But no way am I leaving to do that. I might miss something!”
“I’ll grab the corn and the pan and butter,” Lafayette said, up and on the move. “S.I. can add the heats while we sits and watches!”
“Excellent,” S.I. nodded heartily.
With much applause and fanfare while S.I. did a controlled burn on the pan, popcorn came to be and the family settled in to watch.
“Would you just watch Eric…” Sookie was laughing. “Damn, that boy can work it!”
“Mútta,” Eric began sweetly, giving her that little boy grin that gotten him out of plenty of trouble. “Fairly wanted to sacrifice me, so that she could Fae. There was an elaborate ruse to get me into the library and to my death.
My Faðir went in first so that I would not walk into a trap and he warned me of what to be aware of.
When I did not succumb to her many deceptions, she killed her twin sister instead and set her insanity in motion.
With my blood,” his lower lip trembled a bit. “She wanted this madness so that she might kill my Faðir,” there was sadness in his voice.
Please Mútta,” he took her hand and placed a kiss on it. “If I might go with you? I would like to see you destroy who thought to destroy me and then hold Fae hostage so that my Faðir would consent to marry her to bring about his end.”
“My Son,” she said softly, stroking his face. “How proud I am of you.” Pulling Eric’s head down she placed a kiss on his forehead.
Her eyes went to Er-erikr. “Is this true, Lover? This whore wanted to kill our son so that she could marry you and then place you upon her altar as well?”
The king was no one’s fool. It was obvious what his son was doing…going in for the kill! Erikr could be charming. Well, his son had inherited that particular skill from him! He wanted invited in as well.
“Yes my wife,” he nodded, taking her hand and placing kisses, there. “She wanted our son,” his soft voice carried anger, “to offer as a sacrifice to let loose the madness. When I thwarted that, by doing recon first and explaining to Erikr what I had found so he would be prepared, she sacrificed her twin sister that she had shifted into a broom. Then, she had vowed I must marry her if I did not want our home world destroyed while she poisoned me off at her leisure.
My heart lies with my family and I had stated on numerous occasions that when all appeared lost, I was sending Erikr back to earth and closing all the portals.”
“You are so fearless, my husband,” she brought his hand to her lips and placed a passionate kiss there!
“My wife, let us discuss with you what is known. There are beings trapped in books in the library. Not all are hospitable. Nor are all evil. I suspect some are citizens that disappeared from our homeworld ages ago. Their energy streams continue to push the currents of their good will in this realm. I would not wish them destroyed.”
“I understand,” she nodded. “The faithful have been locked away to quiet the outcry for vengeance and the evil has been shifted to energy as well, to build an army. Those who have been wronged will be given life, those who have averted justice, it shall be served upon them.
What do you want to do, Lover?” she asked, running her hand down his face.
“Slut!” Fairly yelled across the distance. “I see you! Take you hand from my love slave and tasty dinner!”
There was this thing, Eric remembered, that his mother always did before she took your lifeinto her hands. She would freeze, her head would turn first and look at you, a stoic look there that spoke of neither anger or joy. Then she would turn her body so that it faced you. With her knife in her hand, your guts would end up lying at her feet as she would turn back around and continue on with her discussion.
“Not one fucking clue,” he chuckled silently to himself as Fairly began with the crude and somewhat disgusting barbed remarks being tossed this way.
His father, who he had always considered a strong man with moral character, formed a blue ball of flame in his hands and with the accuracy of a fastball pitcher lobbed it directly at Fairly. She screamed and then the house began to collapse back upon itself.
“What a mouth on that child,” Gretta said as she shook her head in disgust. “Where is her mother?” she asked. “Sugn is not dead. She was not with the dragon mothers.”
“We thought maybe Fairly had killed her,” Eric said.
“Yes,” Er-erikr nodded.
“The mother of mayhem is not dead. Maybe she left Fairly to stand guard while she went into Dragon Slumber.”
“Dragon Slumber?” O.I. said.
“Yes, O’ King of the Dragons,” Gretta bowed her head to him. “She can perform a ritual cleansing and put herself into a state of hibernation.”
“Like the Living Death?” Er-erikr asked.
“The what?” she replied.
“Simply put,” O.I. began, “while a soul yet lives, a dragon can coat their entire body, inside and out, with a special mix of his saliva. When that being dies, the body is dead but the brain and its functions lives on. There is horrible pain as the organs attempt to function but cannot, the body wanting to breathe but cannot.”
“Well yes,” she nodded, “that sounds like a variation of Dragon Slumber, minus the pain.”
“So, you think she is down there in the library, somewhere?” Eric asked.
“Yes,” Gretta smiled, “yes I do. Waiting to be woke from her slumber.
We shall see what her daughter, the disrespectful slut does next. After she has thrown at us all that she thinks of, then she will wake her mother and the true fun shall begin.”
“Mútta,” Eric stepped behind his mother and put his hands on her shoulders. “The ground is rippling around the wall.”
“Have you a sword, my son?” she asked turning to see him.
“Not with me,” he sadly shook his head. “They are all at the castle.”
“Someone, please, fetch a sword for your King and Prince. The first battle of the Unrighteous Sugn Dynasty is about to begin.”
Sookie looked over at Lafayette and Gran. “I am lovin’ these front row seats and the popcorn. Thanks S.I. for providin’ both.
This is better than sittin’ out on the balcony of the castle.
That Eric…” she laughed while shaking her head. “He is his momma’s baby boy! Workin’ the angles so he can go on the hunt!
Dad is not doin’ too bad either. I think they will both be walking the halls of the unrighteous with her.”
“The ground is still moving,” Eric said as he was handed a sword and took a step forward.
“Give it a moment,” Gretta put a hand on his arm. “The first things up will set the tone and we will know how to fight them.”
“What do you mean?” Eric asked.
“The harmonics my son. Everything gives off a sound and adds to the whole. Dragons’ ears are very fine tuned to this. We have perfect pitch and the vibration that this creature gives off will tell us what key the battle will be fought in.”
“Seriously?” he asked.
“Seriously?” Sookie asked looking at S.I.
“Yes,” was heard and then the rumble got louder.
“They are trying to disguise the pitch,” Gretta grinned, “but it is there strong and true.”
“I hear it. F#, Major,” Eric said, listening.
“Yes,” his mother nodded. “Those music lessons I see, have paid off. And you said you would never need them,” she smiled at him and tweaked his nose.
“Now, we shall not noise along in anything that is a F#, Major. We shall keep our noise in any minor key, just so we do not excite the unclean masses.”
“There are going to be masses?” Er-erikr asked.
“Yes. Wait for it,” she smiled. “They are pushing up out of a tunnel they are creating on the outside of the bubble. My husband if you would, drop the shield. Let us make this easy on them.
Wait for it. There, do you hear it. The note has changed. “Now! To arms!” she yelled, as she started forward running, her sword at the ready with her husband and son behind her!
“To arms!” Ranger yelled and the troops took to the field.
“Have you ever?” Gran said, leaning forward, awe in her voice.
“Viking women were fierce,” Sookie replied as giant looking sloths with teeth and fangs began to hop up out of the ground.
“No kiddin’, His La La Fineness says. Just look at the legs on those creatures…are they hoppin? And look how those legs go flyin’! That sword cuts through bone, teeth, you name it!
That woman has a thousand years of Eric’s blood of berserker rage, the death bringin’ madness, and warrior blood spillin’ the unholy on a grand scale.
Plus a thousand years of her own blood needin’ to right wrongs and brings justice, flowin’ in her veins!”
“Not to mention the Mother Dragon!” S.I. added with reverent conviction and a great big nod of his head.
“Can we have more popcorn?” Sookie asked. “My bowl is low and I think this could take a while and this stuff is delicious! The butter is the perfect shade of brown!”
“I am proud to do the honors, my princess,” O.I. grinned as he added more popcorn to then pan and then was flame on!
“I is gettin’ The Deaths,” Lafayette added as he picked up the bottle and refilled his cup. “This is better than Saturday Night Raw!”
“Fall back!” the order was shouted out and the soldiers began their trek back to high ground.
Gretta morphed to dragon and took to the air, burning the bodies on the ground until nothing was left but ash. Coming in for a landing, she morphed back to human and floated down to her husband and son.
“I like a clean battle field,” she said as she watched the house slowly begin to form.
Fairly appeared at a window. Leaning out, she then disappeared from the opening and they heard her calling them from the roof.
“I see you are not cowards,” she laughed. “When my shock troops break through, many shall be dead and I shall dance in their blood and awake all those that sleep.
However, my king, it displeases me greatly to still see you in the company of that whore! I shall have to punish you for keeping company with her and refusing mine!
I see that your blue perimeter is gone so that me and mine might move around at will.
Awwww, did I drain you of your fae essence?” she snickered. “Well,” she winked as she sat down on the roof and pulling up her skirts once more spread her legs. “I have yet to drain you of that essence,” she snickered and licked her lips. “Oh how delightful that shall be. As I suck out your seed you shall wither and grind and dissipate until only a husk is left. Something I can perhaps, use as a wrap when I venture into the Ice Mountains of Endless Dreams.
I know you walk there and have some great treasure buried within those silent, raw, peaks. Just what would a fae king keep there? I have often wondered if you went looking for my mother, there. And I often wondered if you found her. And if so, just what did you do with her? Perhaps you keep her still.
I think you will tell me as you gasp out your last. I understand that as the last of your seed is suckled from your body, ending your life, that the experience is ecstasy and the agony horribly exact and precise.
And that heir making part of you shall be a tremendous feast for me as I taste it on my tongue and wallow it about in my mouth for the sheer pleasure of knowing your death was caused by my blow job.
And my prince,” she licked her lips as her gaze traveled over Eric, “I look forward to doing the same thing to you.”
“That is quite enough,” Gretta said stepping forward, “you perverted, narcissist twat.”
“I spent time on earth,” she hissed. “Paris,” she said batting her eyes. “I know,” the fury was unleashed in her voice, “what that foul term means! How dare you address me as such! I shall enjoy devouring you!”
“Would you now?” Gretta chuckled. “Just how do you feel about ingesting dragon poisoned meat?”
“What?” her voice went up a note and she closed her legs.
“You heard me, you disgusting slut! I took no pleasure in hearing what it was you wished to do to my husband and then my son.”
“What?” her voice went up again and then she stood. “You…you…are a ghost. A sliver of a pleasing moment that was tasted on my tongue that has been forgotten. You cannot be. Dead is dead. I have decreed it so.
My warriors are coming to devour you. Their strength and cunning shall be legendary.”
The house collapsed only half way to allow the swarm of skeletons of fae from long ago to come flying out!”
“To arms!” was called out by the troops on the ground and the house was once more a solid rock barricade.
As the skeletons approached, the grinding of their bones and the screams of pain followed them across the small valley.
“Remove their heads,” Gretta bellowed. “Only remove their heads!”
With a mighty clash, the battle began, with heads flying! And when the body fell, a new head grew and flesh formed!
“Where am I?” was asked by all who rejuvenated. “Where have I been? Who are you?” was asked in fear. “Does Sugn still stalk our woods and glens?” was asked as many began to back crawl away.
“I am Er-erikr, King of the Fae,” he said stepping forward. “You have been locked in a library. Sugn does not walk here. But we are fighting a battle with her daughter.
Ranger, get them an escort to the castle and roust the librarians to answer their questions.”
Fae of all sizes bowed to the king and helping each other up, began their journey in this new land that was strange and mystical.
“Was that a cyclopes?” Sookie asked. “And…was that Captain Hook walkin’ beside him?”
“Look,” Gran pointed. “There goes Little Bo Peep and…and…Humpty Dumpty…I think,” she gasped out in surprise.
“I have seen odds, His La La Fineness says and I have seen odder, but I don’t thinks have ever seen a donut with legs, arms and a head. Looks to be coconut frostin’ for hair.”
“So-o-o-o-o, they are from Fae, originally?”
“Appears so,” Gran nodded. “Anyone besides me now want a hot donut?”
“That’s just wrongs,” Lafayette chuckled, “but I coulds go for ones. If they call it a nights, I will take myself to the kitchen and fry up some white trash donuts. Gran, you got canned biscuits?”
“ I do,” she replied.
“Then we are in the biz, in a bits and a bits.”
Sookie stood and walked over to the portal. “Hey!” she called out.
The family turned and looked at her. “Can you guys put that bubble back up? Lafayette said he would fry us up some donuts but we need a commercial break. And now that we are talking about them, I am cravin’ one. You know, baby cravin’ and all. I am carrin’ Eric’s heir,” she said with attitude and pointing her finger, “and makin’ you’ll grandparents.”
“Oh!” Gretta shouted, “my baby is having a baby! Of course, by all means, Lover, if you would please we need a….a…? Co-mmer-cial?” she asked, carefully sounding out the word.
“Of course my bride,” he smiled and lifted his hands. “I am on that!
Ranger, if you would please, monitor the situation and we shall be back shortly.”
“What the fuck, what the fuck, what the fuck, what the fuck?” Fairly kept repeating as she went down the stairs to the library, carrying the torch and cursing her magic and the lack of light.
“Momma is still alive? He cannot know that. Nobody knows that. That is not even possible. She wept great tears until she melted into the floor and left nothing behind but her oily fats and her secrets to which I was not privy!
Ha! Thought she would rest easy beneath my floor! Ha! With pleasure I swept her into a bucket and deposited it into the River Seine. Her pouring was lovely.
I do so love Paris in the spring!” she said with a sigh, remembering happier and sex filled times. “Of course,” her laughter got louder, “I poured that bitch on the ice flow in the dead of winter!”
“Liar,” she heard the voice, then laughter.
“Get the fuck out of here,” she yelled and turning, spit in all four directions. “You horrible bitch! You are just a voice inside my head! Or in this room!
Or…or…” she let go of a small scream and righted herself. “What are you doing, Fairly? It is just a voice! The worst is yet. Keep it together!”
The purple glow was up ahead and it was pulsing. “Like a heart beat,” she shivered. “Damn, I hate that thing on the floor! It watches me! It taunts me! It makes me want to just scream and scream and scream!”
Skirting the main entrance, she made a sign for the evil eye as she hurried past the alcove and down a hall, then another and pushed through a wall to come out at her small but homey kitchen.
“Tea, I need my tea,” she shook all over and absorbed the relevance and the greatness of the moment! “This is the last time I shall have tea as Fairly! The next pot I have shall be made in the royal kitchen and it shall be served to Queen Fairly!”
Opening the canister she took a deep sniff and then stepped back. “Who has fucked around with my tea? Who turned my tea leaves into a green goo? What the fuck?” she screamed and stamped her foot. “What the fuck? I must one last time have the tea! Momma said I must! And over that cup I had to declare myself Queen and then when morning breaks, they will bow down and worship me! Well those that are left that I did not kill!
Well fuck! That is not going to happen! This is the last! I have no more of Momma’s blend.
Well wait. Be the rational Fairly! Why can’t I just heat the water and pour some of this into my cup and have tea? I mean….I mean…”she looked into the crock…”I mean it is just tea leaves in there.”
Stirring the coals, she set the pot to boil and carefully spooned the green sludge out of the crock and into her cup. “Smells like tea,” she said taking a whiff. “It’s not moving, so it is tea and not something else that will reconstitute and bite my ass.
Good, the water is hot. Now pour and watch the water turn a lovely green color. Yes, excellent.” Taking a sip, she spewed it out of her mouth, screaming in pain as she could feel the inside of her mouth begin to blister. “Fucking unicorns,” she lisped, “they put salt in my tea! Unicorn is going to be on the menu at the castle just as soon as I take over!
I wonder how my troops are doing? There should be several fallen king’s guards by this time and several more willing to leave the king and come to my side. If I can not have tea, well, I can drink blood!”
“My King,” Ranger called through the portal, licking the coconut frosting bits from his hand. “The donut was delicious and the house is growing.”
“We are on our way,” he said standing.
“Thank you Lafayette,” he bowed and bowed, again. “Your white trash donuts were most excellent! Especially with the coconut frosting!”
“My pleasure,” he replied as he toasted him with The Death.
“We are back to it. Son, are you coming with us?”
“Of course,” he smiled. “ I want to be there when Mútta gives this bitch her comeuppance!”
“Will be a goods and righteous and long time comin’ comes to Jesus meetin’,” Lafayette nodded. “Now, Momma Gretta, do you want a donut to go?”
“Oh yes please,” she smiled. “Maybe more than one if that is possible. Never have I tasted something that has brought such jubilation and yet a feeling of elation and ease to my mouth. Such a blessing from your hands! Valhalla has smiled upon you and smote you with luxuriousness, poetry, and a heart that stands true,” she smile sweetly at him.
“Momma Gretta,” he sighed, placing both hands over his heart, “His La La Fineness says for you, the world!”
“She is charming,” Gran smiled as she waved at them through the portal.
“Yes she is,” Sookie nodded. “Wow, you can really see where Eric gets it from. Both sides. I mean his dad is charming, but his mom…whoa baby! When Eric goes to all sweetness and light and drags you along with him on that fluffy cloud of roses and cupids, mixed in with smiles and dimples, that boy learned it from her!”
“Well she had to know how to parlay and smile while she held a sharp blade,” Gran added. “When she was clan chieftain, those she could not persuade, she gutted.”
“Seems to be,” Sookie chuckled. “Something else Eric inherited. Kill first and ask questions, never.”
“Oh, the house is up and Fairly is out on the roof. There goes Mom, striding her way across the field to the house to do battle, with Dad and Eric behind her.
You know what this reminds me of, when Aragorn walks up to the Black Gates in The Return of the Kingand demands the Dark Lord come out so justice can be served upon him.
Man, Dad had her dressed real nice while she rested. Girly warrior! She looks smokin’ like that! Love that chain mail she is wearin’ along with that dress! And she has no need to twirl a sword around. She looks scary enough with it just in her hand!”
“There she goes to throw down her words,” Lafayette was watching intently. “If I was Fairly, I woulds just come on down and give it all ups.”
“I am under the impression she really is not that smart,” Gran replied.
“Good call, Gran,” Lafayette and Sookie both said, high fived and settled in to watch.
“Look,” Fairly laughed pointing, “It is she who is not dead!” she hooted. “Ghost, just what type of power do you think you have here?”
“Stupid child,” Gretta said shaking her head. A ball of blue lightning appeared in her hand, then snaked out like a rope and tightened around Fairly’s arm! With a yank, Fairly was through the blue containment field, screaming in pain, then Gretta drew back her arm and slung her back through it.
As Gretta walked around the bubble, she whipped Fairly back and forth and each time she crossed through, there were screams of agony, the stench of burning and also a less human looking Fairly. Her dragon persona was coming to the forefront each time she was whipped through the field and back.
“What is Mom doin’?” Sookie asked. “And…what is that slick stuff running down the sides of the bubble?”
“I believe she is making her point,” Gran replied. “Not only to Fairly, but to everyone in the realm of the fae. She is not one to be trifled with.”
“That slick stuff,” S.I. turned and looked at Sookie, “that is something foreign to Fairly. That is…” S.I. whiffed. “That is dragon saliva. Interesting though, it is not Fairly’s dragon saliva. But a relative’s. Smells enough like her but older. Our Queen is sifting it out of her. Just as Fairly poisoned her, our Queen is removing anything extra that does not belong to her.”
“Okay, eeeeuuuu!” Sookie said with disgust. “Do you think she ate her momma?”
“She somethinged her momma,” S.I replied. “Looks like our Queen is ridding that fool’s body of it.”
“Okay, they have been completely around the buildin’ and they are back at the beginnin’. And Fairly is just one butt-ugly dragon-dinosaur lookin’ thing, maybe missing some bits.”
“I believe that was our Queen’s intent. Get her back to her original form. Just as our Queen is back to her original form.”
“Justice,” Gran nodded. “I like the way Miss Gretta thinks!”
“Indeed,” S.I. smiled. “I must say, our Queen has a sense of humor. Much like her son’s.”
“Yes, now there is some dramatic irony for you,” Sookie laughed. “Fairly is living through it and has not one clue of the very fine and well thought out nuances of her demise. However to us, the audience, it is pretty clear what is takin’ place. Mom is dispensing justice. Fairly probably just calls it an ass whoppin’.
Oh wait one, Mom just spit on her, I think.”
“Yes,” S.I. looked at the group and nodded. “You can smell the poison taking root. You hear that scream? That is the poison eating through her.”
The blue shield dropped and Fairly lay on the ground, horrible pustules growing on her body, exploding and then oozing.
Numerous times she had passed through the blue fire of the fae and their were lacerations and burns all over her body and broken bones protruding out as well.
As she lay bleeding and fragmented she was gasping for air through the shattered bones in her throat.
“I will show you mercy,” Gretta said as she approached her. “I will not leave you to endure this fate.” Raising her sword, she cut off Fairly’s head.
“What is that?” Er-erikr asked, pointing. “That thing slithering along and joining together. Is that the substance that Gretta removed from Fairly?”
“Well now, there is something you do not see everyday,” Eric was watching and pointing out the path it was taking. “It is headed toward the door. And oh my goodness, there it goes.”
“Gretta,” Er-erikr called out. “We are going to have something coming up out of the basement.”
“I know,” she called back. “It is Sugun, she is on her way. Her line ends tonight along with all those that she marked as her own. The spell of the lizard harlot will be lifted and peace will once more reign.”
Father and son looked at each other. “Well just damn,” they both said together and settled in to watch.
“Well just damn,” S.I. whispered. “The lizard curse will be lifted and I am blessed to witness it.”
They all felt the earth shake and a roar surge through the house front doors, along with fire and smoke and the strong smell of sulfur.
The doors blew off and then the front of the building exploded outwards and out stepped Sugn. Sniffing the air, she walked over to Fairly and lifting her leg, pissed on her.
“Can a mother nap, at all, without her selfish, mean spirited daughter trying to take all that she owns. I warned her a couple of times that I was coming for her. She never did listen nor did she believe that I would hunt her and destroy her. Stupid child,” she lifted her front foot and flattened her head, leaving her standing in a pool of brains, blood and teeth.
“I thank you for the return of my fireblood,” she smiled out at the crowd. “While I slept I watched and knew that she had tricked her sister Brewer into revealing where it was kept. Fairly did not wish me to wake so she drank it and endured my words of displeasure from time to time. The stupid child had no idea of the power she had consumed and now she will never know. Pity that, I would have loved to have laughed at her while she pouted about her loss.”
Her eyes looked out at the men who stood off in the distance. Then she gazed at the woman who was only a fire’s breath from her!
“Now who killed my daughter? I am grateful for my deep sleep to be over, but truly, she was my daughter,” she roared, “and not yours to kill!”
“I killed her,” Gretta stepped forward. “Like for like. That is the dragon way, is it not?”
“It is,” she nodded. “So she killed your daughter?”
“No,” Gretta shook her head. “She killed me. Then she wanted to kill my husband and son and my pregnant daughter.”
“So you are the one,” and in her voice was laughter. “The one that I saw who has a son who is vampire.”
“Yes,” she nodded.
“There was nothing remarkable about you,” she laughed again. “Just a Halfling that gave birth to a son that would unlock the power that I wished to absorb into myself. And now my time has come and your son is here. What an honor has been bestowed upon me.”
“Your time is past,” Gretta informed her. “The portal in the cave has been locked. No one can access it. My son and his champions have seen to this.”
“What?” she hissed. “What? Impossible? Those creatures were promised to me!”
“Well, now they are lost to the ages, their home in the underworld continues to be just that. Their home. Fae stands and with its continuance comes your death.”
Sugn threw her head back and laughed! “You poor Halfling. You will be a tasty snack. With great abandon, I will eat your bones and those of your fam…”
With a great leap Gretta was in the air and bringing her sword down with a mighty slash and flash of light, cut off her head.
As the body lay there, pulsing out blood from the neck, all the soldiers, cheered! As did Er-erikr and Eric! Turning, she approached her husband and son with a smile of victory on her lips. Her husband picked her up and twirled with her in his arms while he placed kisses all over her face. With a deep kiss, they parted and then husband and son put her in the middle of them and with their arms around her started for the castle.
“Excellent my mother. You are still a woman not to be trifled with,” Eric kissed her on the forehead as he stopped at the portal. “My parents, this is where I shall wish you a very pleasant evening. I would suggest that you start with a bath. There appears to be dragon blood on both of you. And perhaps,” he delicately removed something from his mother’s hair, “a bit of brain matter as well,” he said with a smile.
“My King and my Queen,” he bowed, “please do not disappoint your subjects. Produce many more heirs for the Fae so that I am off the hook. I am proof that you know how.”
Eric walked up to the portal and with a grand bow and a flourish of his hand, “Adieu,” he blew them a kiss and stepped through.
Christmas Eve Eve
“This is pleasant,” Gretta said as she watched the fire and inhaled the pine scent. “Remember,” she smiled at O.I., “we would cut the pine and place the limbs at the front of the doors to wipe our feet upon.”
“Yes,” he smiled at his queen and blew her a smoke ring in the shape of a heart.
“I like the festiveness, it is so cheery! This is lovely, so warm and cozy while it snows outside.
Gran,” she turned to the lady who was sitting at the table and playing cards with Sookie, O.I and Lafayette. “Your home is lovely. Thank you so much for inviting us for your winter’s feast!”
The door opened and Eric and Er-erikr came in carrying wood.
“It is our pleasure,” Gran replied. “It is just so nice to be surrounded by family at the holidays.”
“Yes it is,” Gretta nodded.
“Oh, wait one, my husband,” she said standing. “You have tracked in snow. Here wipe your feet on this towel and I will sweep the rest out the door.
My Lover and my son,” she smiled at them, as she scooted the snow outside. “Did you always pass the holy days in such a way together?”
All that could be heard was the fire hissing as Eric tossed a wet log onto the flame.
“Husband?” she admired the now clean floor and took another sweep with the broom. “You and our son,” she was smiling, “family is very important at this time. Share with us your times together as you celebrated the solstices and Valhalla’s return to the night sky.”
There was still no response, which she thought was most odd. Everyone in the village waited for the bridge to return!
“Erikr,” her voice held stillness. “It is an easy thing for you to open a portal and step through to wish your father a joyous day…
or perhaps to say hello…”
The snow had picked up and was now hitting the windows and making its way past the porch and through the door.
“Lover,” her voice had taken on a pitch that was perhaps not as lovely as a few minutes before. “You saw our son while I slept?”
“Not exactly,” he replied turning to look at her as he stacked the wood.
“Is that a yes or a no?” she asked.
“I would sometimes watch him from a distance but never to speak to him.”
“Why not?” her voice was low and questioning. “Make me understand this.”
“After you went to sleep, we fought the Unholy War here on earth. I declared outlaw those that had harmed you and they became my crusade.
Eric joined me in that effort and afterwards told me that he never wanted to see me again.”
“What?” she gasped.
“He told me to fuck off, loudly and numerous times.”
“Fuck,” she had a quizzical look on her face. “An English term that means to beat about the head and shoulders.”
“It means something much more vulgar than that now,” he said slowly. “It connotes the sex act. Also, it is a word that shows just how much you are angry. Beyond being able to express yourself in a clear and concise manner.”
Her head was up and her eyes were blazing as she stared at Eric. “So, how long, my son, did you go without seeing your father?”
“Mother…” he began then stopped. She was not pleased. Would be for the best just to lay it all out there. “I believed that he did nothing to save you. Yes I was angry…beyond belief. I, I thought he did not love you.”
“Did not love me,” she echoed, disbelief on her face. “My son, answer my question. How long?”
“Almost a thousand years,” his voice was a whisper.
“An age,” she gasped. “My husband and my son had no family for an age?” she gasped.
Reaching out with the broom, she hit Eric across the head with it, when he yelped, she yelled, “Did I raise you to be disrespectful to your father? Did I?” she hit him again.
“No mother, of course not,” he cried out as he raised his hands to protect his head.
“Of course I did not,” she swatted him on the body and pushed him out the open door.
“And you,” she turned on Er-erikr, “you let our son speak to you in such a voice? Say such things!”
“My wife,” he began and then he was hit with the broom as well. He began backing out of the door as she advanced on him, swinging. When she was outside, she unleashed her displeasure on both of them!
Both males were yelling and asking for forgiveness while she chased them about the yard in the snow.
“Would you just looks at how sure-footed she is,” Lafayette chuckled. “I suspects this is not the first time those two have had a broom taken to them during the wintering months.”
“You know,” Sookie was laughing. “When those two would talk about her, I thought she must be at least seven feet tall.”
“Mr. Eric’s, he done married someone who reminded him of his momma. Queen Momma might be small and Sookie sized but she is fast and carries a powerful wallop!”
“Gawd I love her,” she chuckled as both males had now picked her up and were carrying her above their heads as they chanted “Gud Yule” while she still tried to swat them with her broom!
“Yes, a very good Gud Yule!” she smiled at the three. “Christmas is just about upon us and I think it is going to be a white one,” Sookie said softly as she watched the snow flakes gently hit the window, then chuckled when Mom caught Eric on the back of the legs and they all three went down into the snow, laughing!
“Lafayette,” she turned to face him. “What was the preacher’s challenge for December? I still got a couple of days. I can make this happen. I want that 12thgold star next to my name at church.”
“Oh Miss Sooks,” he smiled at her, “there was only one word on this month’s challenge.
Thanks for hanging with me while I drive the bus and continue to give tours!
Hey, the mayor of Crazy presented me with keys to the city! Actually, that would be more like a sidewalk. Well just woohoo!
I am going to be doing some editing on my original fiction so I will go somewhat silent for a while. (aaahhhhhh….isn’t this how this story started….I was taking a break from editing…..!) But I also have an idea for a short, short, short Halloween story for E&S. Hoping to make that happen.
Until then Boo to You!
As always, thanks for reading!
Be blessed and be the blessing,
